How to Start a Blog

I have been blogging now for over a year, so I have quite a lot of experience in what it takes to start a blog. I thought that I would round my advice up, to help anyone out who is thinking of starting a blog, because it can be quite confusing.

Setting up your blog
The very first thing that you need to do is choose which website you are going to use to set up your blog with. The two most popular ones that people go for, are usually Wordpress or Blogger. I don't have any experience with Wordpress, so I'm not sure what it's like. I have always used Blogger, and it does a good job of making things simple and straight forward.

Once you have chosen the website that you are using, you will probably need to set up an account. Blogger is very easy if you already have a Google account because they are linked, so you can log in through that.

Choosing your name and layout
The next thing to do, is definitely one of the hardest, and that is naming your blog. If you already have an idea in your head, this could be easy, but if not it may take a bit of time. You will also find that a lot of the domains are already taken; a lot more than you would expect to be. However, most people go on to by their own domain anyway, because if you use blogger, it will have '.blogspot' on the end. So don't overly worry yourself about it at this point.

If you are using either blogger or wordpress, they both have default templates, which will decide the colour and layout of your blog. The free ones are not always great, but I used them for a few months and then went on to buy my current template from

You will need to do some work on the layout, in order to get your blog set up exactly how you want it. If you are using blogger, you need to go to layout, and then you can move things around and add features, such as an archive, which is a list of all your blog posts and what month they were from. I wouldn't over do it at first. Just keep your layout simple, because no one will want to read a blog that is overcrowded and all over the place. You can just add features as you go along.

Writing your first post
Writing your first post, will probably be the hardest. You will probably struggle to find your feet a bit, but don't worry because everyone's earlier posts will probably make them cringe later on. Just write something in the niche and style that you intend to carry on with. I would also recommend focusing on your photography. Not everyone will be a pro at first. I still struggle now. People will notice your pictures though, so try to make them stand out and look nice. You won't need an expensive camera, because phones work just as well.

Social Media
I'm guessing that the main reason you are writing a blog, is for people to read it. For this, social media is the best way to get yourself out there and well known. I recommend setting up a Bloglovin' account and linking it to your blog. This is the best place to gain followers and it will publish your posts on there automatically, which will spread them to a much wider audience.

I would also recommend setting up a Twitter for your blog. I have an independent one for my blog (which is @beautybillboard if you aren't already following me). So many bloggers have accounts, and it is a great way to communicate with others and spread the word of your blog.

That's about it, so I wish you the best of luck. If you have any questions, hit me up, and also if anyone is starting a blog, leave me your link in the comments. Also, if you would like me to do a part 2 for this, and talk about gaining followers and growing your blog, let me know.
